In Rexburg, you can find out the gender as early as 16 weeks if you pay a $50 fee and schedule the extra appointment. (Usually they just tell you at your 20ish week anatomy appointment). We were dying to know so we found out early on March 17th.
Before March 17th I told myself I really didn't care if it was a boy or girl (because that was the right thing to do). We walked into the ultrasound room and got all ready for the big reveal. The ultrasound tech looked at the screen and said "Oh, the heart rate is high, its a girl" and laughed. I had previously heard that it was a myth so I was confused if she was kidding or not. (Not really a thing you should joke about). She then said "A lot of people think the heart rate can tell the gender. Its not true, especially in this case because its a BOY!" After she said that for some reason my heart sank. I guess I really wanted a girl. How horrible am I? I know. I freaked out a little bit. I had no idea how my female body could create a male body. I had no clue how I was going to raise a little BOY.
[That heart-sinking feeling could have also been because the day before we found out that our cousin was naming her little boy the only boy name we could agree on. We told ourselves, "oh its fine, it'll probably be a girl" but we were back to square one on the boy name search.]
As the day went by and we told our families, I got over my little let down of him not being a her. I started to get less scared and more excited and that excitement only grew as time went on. Spoiler: I am currently obsessed with my little boy and don't think it could be any other way.
